What are your plans for
this summer? Are you going to the beach? The lake? Camping? If you're
staying home, are you going to be doing a lot of gardening or cooking
out? Will you be doing Regardless of what you do or where you go,
one thing is certain-if you are going to spend a lot of time
outdoors, you're going to need to take care of your skin. By 'take
care of your skin', I mean apply sunscreen, some kind of bug
repellant and/or have something on hand to treat any sunburns or
rashes you or someone in your family may have. In an earlier post, I
gave home remedies for rashes and sunburns
(http://www.womensoutdoorlife.com/2012/07/home-remedies-for-rashes-and-sunburns.html),
but here are some all-natural, highly-recommended products.
Just a tip-as for
sunscreen, don't solely go on the SPF factor. This only measures how
it protects your skin against UVB rays, not UVA. Look for “UVA/UVB'
or 'broad-spectrum' on the labels. Also, look into lip protection, as
that is an area we often forget about.
One line to check out
is All Terrain. Focusing completely on outdoor skincare, they have
several lotions and sprays that protect just as well as 'commercial'
brands, but without the chemicals. I really like the sprays because
they don't feel as oily on your skin as some lotions. One thing I'd
recommend when using a spray-When applying to places like shoulders
and arms, spray it into your hand first and then apply it to
your body. That way, you have a bit more control of where the spray
goes (the air, eyes, someone else, etc.) All Terrain also features
bug repellants, natural first-aid products and travel kits They even
have a line for pets! If you want to know more, visit
http://www.allterrainco.com/.
Kiss My Face is another
great line of all-natural products. If you're concerned about signs
of aging, KMF has a great crème called Cell Mate that works as both
a facial crème and a sunscreen. Its Oat Protein Sun Screen does
similar things, but tends to be less expensive. However much it
costs, you're getting two products in one. For the athletes out
there, they also carry a broad-spectrum sports spray with an SPF of
50. Your kids will love the colored ones! You'll love it too, since
the color fades to tell you it's time to reapply. Also, most Kiss My
Face products are paraben-free and are not tested on animals. For
more information, check out http://www.kissmyface.com/.
Finally, there's one of
my all-time favorite lines-Burt's Bees. While they don't have much in
the way of sunscreen, they have several products that can help deal
with the sun's after-effects. Their Aloe & Linden Flower After
Sun Soother is great for burns as well as maintaining a tan. They
also have an all-natural bug repellant, poison-ivy soother and
bug-bite relief. There is also a great ointment for cuts and scrapes.
They are sold at most big-box stores, as well as drug and health-food
stores. For more information, check out http://www.burtsbees.com/.
As you can see, there
are plenty of all-natural products out there that can do a good job
caring for your skin without harsh chemicals. They don't all cost an
arm and a leg, and they're usually not hard to find. I, for one, am very
grateful for that! Enjoy your summer!
