Golf is no longer a male dominated sport. Since the establishment of the LPGA, in 1950, the number of women in golf has greatly increased. The LPGA is the oldest women’s sports organization in the United States. It was founded by Babe Dickenson Zaharias and 12 other women golfers. The LPGA holds many events and tournaments every year. Golf is not “for men only,” anymore. There are many talented, top ranking, professional and amateur, women golfers in the United States and around the world. Golf has become a popular women’s sport in college and high school, also. Along with Babe Dickenson (AP’s Female Athlete of the Year for 5 years), Patty Berg, Dorothy Campbell, Fay Crocker, and Mary Mills are a few of the all time great women golfers. Who are the new female celebs in the golf world? Lorena Ochoa, Annika Sorenstam, Yiani Tseng, Kristy McPhearson, Ai Miyazato, and Michelle Wie are some of today’s top celebrity golfers. Teenage, newcomer Alexis Thompson is getting a lot of attention among young female golfers.
Golfing Women to Look Up To
The top five female golfers in women’s world golf rankings are (in ranking order number 1 to 5) Ai Miyazato (Japan), Jiyai Shin (South Korea), Cristie Kerr (United States), Yani Tseng (Tiawan), and Suzann Petterson (Norway). Professionally speaking, there are quite a few golfing women to look up to. Many professional and amateur female golfers make an effort to stand out in other ways, also. Most famous women golfers make a conscience effort to set a good example and be good role models for young people. Some provide monetary support as well as devoting their time and energy to a variety of causes, organizations and charities. Many of these women golfers are motivated by religious values or personal experiences and others simply have a strong desire to help others or to make a worthwhile contribution which would benefit the world in some way.
Morgan Pressel is outstanding, in various ways, among young female golfers. Her mother, Kathryn Krickstein Pressel, died from breast cancer in 2003. Morgan started the Morgan & Friends Fight Cancer Tournament in Boca Raton, Florida. In addition, with help from Polo Ralph Lauren (with the Pink Pony “Morgan shirt”), she has contributed to raising around one million dollars for the Lynn Cancer Institute’s Breast Cancer Center in Boca Raton and the Sylvester Cancer Center in Miami. Last year, the Kathryn Krickstein Pressel Monno Van was purchased with money raised from the Boca Raton Hospital Foundation’s Go Pink Challenge. The van will be used as a mobile digital mammogram service in Palm Beach County.
Christina Kim won three matches in the Solheim Cup this year. She has struggled with a weight issue over the years. She is currently setting a good example for young ladies everywhere. She has lost 40 pounds in the past year. Christina emphasizes the importance of a healthy diet and regular exercise. She talks about losing weight with unhealthy, fad diets and their susceptibility for eventual failure. These women and other celebrity golfers are good role models and provide great support to fighting poverty and disease around the world.
