Before even getting on bike here is a few things you will need to do to make sure that you are following good bicycle safety and prevent serious injury if you are involved in any car bicycle accidents.
Basic Safety Rules Before Getting on A Bike
- You should always wear a helmet when bicycling. Make sure that the helmet covers the back of your head and your forehead but not your eyes. Also make sure that you always fasten the straps to the helmet securely.
- Make sure you bike is the right size for you, by making sure that the bike size is comfortable to your height.
- You might want to consider wearing a mouth guard. Just like the helmet this could protect you in case of a collision with a car by preventing any damage to the mouth or teeth.
- Wear long sleeves and long straight pant to protect against serious cuts in an accident. Don’t wear baggy pants, like untied shoe laces these can get caught in the bicycle chain and cause an accident. Also always wear socks to protect your feet.
- Wear sunglasses during the day, to protect against the sun’s glare.
Now that you know about the proper equipment its time to learn about some basic bicycle safety rules for when you are out riding your bike in traffic.
- Always ride you bike near the curb on the right side of the street with traffic.
- Remain alert of everything that is going on around you, such as park cars, potholes and pedestrians.
- Obey all traffic signals, and street signs.
- Be alert at intersections, just like pedestrians, bicyclist need to remain very alert at intersections when it comes to traffic, a lot of accidents have happened between motorist and bicyclist at intersections, so its important to stay alert about what traffic is doing when you reach an intersection
- When crossing the street with your bike always walk your bike across the street and never ride it across.
- Use hand signals when turning or stopping to let a motorist know what you are going to do.
- Always keep both hands on the handle bars at all times except when giving a necessary hand signal.
- Try not to ride your bike at night, but if you have to always wear fluorescent clothing and make sure you have a light on the front of your bike so you will be able to see at night, and traffic will be able to see you as well. Try to stay in well lit areas.
